Spiders

26 05 2008

Apparently Spider is a symbol of writing and writers. I’m assuming it’s something to do with the weaving of words and all that. Well over the past week I’ve encountered three of the damned things.

Pestilent beast’s from hell!

Sorry I’m an arachnophobic so you can imagine what my reaction is first thing in the morning to see them in the bathroom. A mixture between shit scared, angry and irritated because they’re in my way of going about my day.

Right so taking the hint from whatever the nebulous things are out there, I’m doing an entry and hashing out some ideas.

My plot. Plot is really important. It has to have a beginning middle and an end.

I’ve got a beginning. It’s the introduction of the characters. I have three main characters. One female who is the lead another female and a male.

Their backgrounds need some more work though.

The middle is the building up of the plot.

The ending now that’s an issue. Where do I want to end things, tie it up. I’m tempted to kill everyone and have the bad guy win but it might not work.

I have more work to do definitely. I’d like to have the main characters sketched out properly and the main plot points done. From there tying the parts together with some transitional points and string. If in doubt use string.

Now I’m going to check the bathroom for arachnids hope that this has satisfied the writing gods for some time. I’ll be back soon with character names and some more details.

Inspiration

24 05 2008

Inspiration is where everything begins really. It’s the point where we see something as mundane as a bicycle chained to a lamppost and wonder about it. We begin to imagine who owns the bike. What that person is like, their job, looks, attitude to the world and everything else.

The thing about inspiration is that it’s fleeting. Well at least it’s fleeting for me. Getting hit by something like a freight train and four in the morning only to end up going “hmm what was that again, something to do with cheese right?”

Then again some things stick. Some things you end up mulling over quite a bit. Today I was walking past a church. There’s a lot of them in Dublin so it’s not unusual. Then I saw the pigeons fluttering about them. Pigeons are all over cities and in particular churches. So if you’re going to hang out in church why do the whole being a bat or something. Why not take the form of a pigeon. It’s pretty usual and typical. Then again why and what would you be doing hanging out near a church in the form of a pigeon. Then what would your typical form be? So you can imagine I’ve been scribbling for hours now about a character for the novel that is a shape shifting pigeon. I reckon that they’ll change and mutate a little bit over the course of hammering out things but it’s a start.

The main inspiration for my story came from an event that happened in Dublin a few years ago now and is mixed with the city’s history. This is something you’ll find out about later on because it’s really not developed all that well.

I suppose the main issue with inspiration is the waves in which it comes at you. Sometimes you can sit and look at a blank sheet of paper for hours on end and nothing but some doodles will end up on the page. Then some days sitting in work, when you’re meant to be doing the job you get paid for, you end up having a flood of ideas. I still haven’t figured out how to kick start the creative process. When I do, I might actually be able to sit for hours and write nonstop. Until then I’ll have to settle for writing things down in my notepad and developing them later on.

So yeah, a great way to start is to just to think about the mundane then let your mind follow some logical conclusions. It’s amazing what will end up with after that.

Hello to the world

20 05 2008

Well that’s what wordpress told me to say.
So I suppose I should do some kind of introduction, what’s this all about type of post to begin with shouldn’t I?

I’m Leanne, an Irish Woman and a writer.

Well ok not a full proper writer. I’ve been writing for years to be honest. I wrote my first novel when I was 14. However it was utterly terrible and a rip off of several things that I was reading/watching at the time so if I were to ever attempt to publish it I’d probably end up getting sued by several people’s estates and companies. Some day it might get revisited and reworked but not right now.

Anyway, after a couple of other forays into the creative writing field I gave up. So yeah I’m an attempting writer not an actual one.
This blog and site are going to be a way for me to document the journey that I’m beginning.
There will be excerpts from my work. The main aim is that I produce the novel that I’ve had mulling around in my head for the past couple of years and more than likely the side projects and ideas that will happen along the way.

I might even have a couple of book and movie reviews. So if you want join me in this, pop by every so often to check the progress or simply pass this up as a mad woman’s attempt to achieve something then so be it.

Hmm now where did I put my pen?
